Veterinary Acupuncture for Pain Relief and Healing

acupuncture_Century_Veterinary_Group_Los_AngelesWhile the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture has been around for centuries, it’s a relatively new development in the Western world of veterinary medicine. Century Veterinary Group offers the procedure for pets, thanks to our certified animal acupuncturist on staff. Our Dr. Giselle Concepcion has been certified in veterinary acupuncture since 2013, and she can administer the ancient Chinese technique on its own or as a component in an overall treatment plan. Acupuncture can be helpful for pain relief and a number of other issues and conditions. It can also combine well with physical therapy, rehabilitation and other healing procedures.

Overall Goal of Acupuncture for Pets

The overall aim of acupuncture is to help your pet’s body heal itself. The traditional Chinese philosophy behind acupuncture is that it opens up the energy pathways so the body’s energy, known as chi, can flow more effectively. The procedure involves the insertion of very thin needles at specific points along your pet’s body. The needle locations may vary depending on the condition or location of the ailment being treated. The insertion points, also known as acupuncture points, are areas where blood vessels and nerve bundles come together.

Muscle relaxation is typically achieved at the site of the needle insertion as well as other locations in the body that are linked to the point of insertion. This creates a specific and overall effect of pain relief. Additional pain relief comes from the needles’ ability to prompt the release of natural substances that reduce inflammation and pain. Acupuncture also works to improve circulation throughout the soft tissues while providing oxygen and removing toxins and metabolic waste.

In addition to its ability to treat pain and other conditions, acupuncture comes with a number of benefits. Because it is an all-natural treatment, your pet won’t suffer the type of side effects found with certain medications. In fact, acupuncture works well to compliment medications and supplements without interfering with their potency or adversely interacting.

Pet acupuncture is a healing treatment that is part of the broader spectrum of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. Other treatments within the spectrum include acupressure, which involves the application of pressure to the acupuncture points; aquapressure, which involves the injections of diluted vitamins and other liquids; and mixibustion, where heated herbal compounds are applied to the needles.

Electrostimulation uses an electric current between the needles to help relax muscle spasms and restore nerve impulses. Laser can also be applied to acupuncture points to reap benefits without the use of needles.

A consultation with our veterinarian is the optimum way to determine if acupuncture could be a helpful tool in the treatment of your pet. Whether we use the method on its own or in combination of other types of treatment, acupuncture can be a beneficial healing tool for the overall wellness of your pet.
